III. Income and Expenditures by Household Characteristics

1. Income and Expenditures by Age Group of Household Heads

(i) Living Expenditures

  Average monthly living expenditure per household was 260,107 yen in the households headed by those under 30.     Likewise, it was 277,572 yen in the households headed by those in their 30s, 346,935 yen in the households headed by those in their 40s, and reached the peak at 380,537 yen in the households headed by those in their 50s. Then, it declined to 306,497 yen in the households headed by those in their 60s and 258,878 yen in the households headed those at age 70 and over. 
  An examination of the ratio of components to total living expenditures by age group of the household heads indicates that the housing accounted for a significant part at 14.1% in the households headed by those under 30 reflecting a low ratio of owned house as compared to other age groups and transportation & communication also took up a large chunk of 19.7%.
  The households headed by those in their 30s exhibited high ratios of housing and transportation & communication after the households headed by those under 30.
  The households headed by those in their 40s had a high ratio of education expenditures at 10.3%.
  The households headed by those in their 50s showed a high ratio of "other living expenditures" at 30.0% due to greater amounts of remittance as compared to other age groups.
  These households also had a high ratio of education expenditures at 6.5% after those in their 40s.
  The households headed by those in their 60s and those at age 70 and over exhibited high ratios of reading & recreation expenditures at 11.2% and 11.3%, respectively, due to increases in expenditures on hotel charges and package tours. In addition, medical care expenditures accounted for 5.2% and 6.0%, respectively, in these age groups. (Figure III-1)

(ii) Income

  According to the analysis for workers' households by age group of the household heads, average monthly income was 368,740 yen in the households headed by those under 30. Likewise, it was 433,919 yen in the households headed by those in their 30s, 526,855 yen in the households headed by those in their 40s, and reached the peak at 582,910 yen in the households headed by those in their 50s. Then, it declined to 429,129 yen in the households headed by those in their 60s and 399,761 yen in the households headed those at age 70 and over.
  An examination of the ratios of various types of income to income reveals that wages & salaries earned by the household heads accounted for 70% or higher in the households headed by those in all age groups from those under 30 and up to those in their 50s. However, it fell to 59.7% in the households headed by those in their 60s and to 44.2% in the households headed by those at age 70 and over. On the other hand, the ratio of "other current income" including social security benefits went up to 16.8% in the households headed by those in their 60s and 33.0% in the households headed by those at age 70 and over. In addition, the ratio of wages & salaries earned by the spouse  accounted for over 10% in the households headed by those in all age groups from those under 30 and up to those in their 50s reaching the peak at 13.9 % in the households headed by those under 30, followed by the households headed by those in their 40s at 12.7%. (iii) Outstanding Savings and Liabilities

  According to the analysis for all households by age group of the household heads, outstanding savings per household was 3.55 million yen in the households headed by those under 30, 6.54 million yen in the households headed by those in their 30s, 11.14 million yen in the households headed by those in their 40s, 16.43 million yen in the households headed by those in their 50s, 22.18 million yen in the households headed by those in their 60s and 22.74 million yen in the households headed by those at age 70 and over. The higher the household head's age group was, the greater the household has in savings.
  In examination of liabilities per household shows that the households headed by those in their 40s had the largest amount in liabilities at 9.64 million yen, which was followed by the households headed by those in their 30s at 8.73 million yen, the households headed by those in their 50s at 6.08 million yen, the households headed by those under 30 at 3.74 million yen, the households headed by those in their 60s at 2.87 million yen and the households headed by those at age 70 and over at 1.90 million yen. Moreover, the households headed by those in their 40s had the largest amount in liabilities for purchase of houses and/or land at 8.78 million yen in liabilities, which was followed by the households headed by those in their 30s at 8.17 million yen and by those under the households headed by those in their 50s at 5 million yen.
  The households headed by those under 30 and those in their 30s had liabilities that exceeded outstanding savings.
  A comparison of outstanding savings and liabilities with those in the 1999 survey reveals that, while outstanding savings decreased in all age groups except those at age 70 and over, liabilities increased in all age groups. (Figure III-3, Table III-1)
