2002 National Survey of Prices: Summary of Results (Small-scale outlet)
3 Difference of prices by location
3.1 Number of outlets by location
- Concerning general retail outlets, supermarkets and cooperative stores, the ratio of outlets located in a residential district is high, while as for volume sales specialty stores, drug stores and convenience stores, the ratio of outlets located along a trunk road is high.
Looking at the ratio of outlets by classifying location into the categories of ?around a railroad station?, ?in a residential district?, ?along a trunk road? and ?others (including underground shopping areas)?, the ratio of ?in a residential district? is the highest at the rate of 38.3%, followed by the ratio of ?along a trunk road? at 34.8%.
Looking at the ratio by type of outlet, regarding ?general retail outlet?, ?supermarket? and ?cooperative store?, the ratio of outlets located ?in a residential district? is the highest among all types of outlet at the ratios of 40.1%, 44.1% and 40.3% respectively, while as for ?volume sales specialty store?, ?drug store? and ?convenience store?, the ratio of ?along a trunk road? is the highest at 51.2%, 38.5% and 50.8% respectively.
Compared to large-scale outlets, the ratio of ?along a trunk road? is lower than that of large-scale outlets in all types of outlet.
3.2 Difference of prices by location
- The difference of prices by location is small.
Regarding the common 100 items, looking at the distribution of the number of the items by location and by price level relative to the average price of overall small-scale outlets, there are many relatively high-priced items ?around a railroad station?, while there are relatively low-priced items ?in a residential district? and ?along a trunk road?. This trend is very similar to the situation of large-scale outlets, however in the case of small-scale outlets, most items fall within the range of 5% and the difference of prices is small. (Table 3.2.1)
At the same time, there are some food stuffs and clothing items for which the difference of prices is more than 5%. (Table 3.2.2)
