(1) Employment 

  The number of employed persons in September 2009 was 62.95 million, a decrease of 980 thousand or 1.5% from the previous year.

(2) Unemployment 

  The number of unemployed persons in September 2009 was 3.63 million, an increase of 920 thousand or 33.9% from the previous year.
  The unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, was 5.3%.
