Results of the Survey of Research and Development

R&D Expenditure

Japan's total expenditure on R&D during fiscal year (FY) 2010 stood at 17,110 billion yen, a decrease of 0.8 percent from the previous fiscal year. It decreased for three fiscal years continuously.
Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of GDP was 3.57 percent, a decrease of 0.07 point percent from the previous fiscal year.

R&D expenditure of business enterprises stood at 12,010 billion yen (accounted for 70.2 percent), non-profit institutions and public organizations stood at 1,666 billion yen (accounted for 9.7 percent), universities and colleges stood at 3,434 billion yen (accounted for 20.1 percent).

With regard to R&D expenditures by main industry of business enterprises, R&D expenditure for manufacture of transportation equipment stood at 2,121 billion yen, manufacture of information and communication electronics equipment stood at 1,729 billion yen, manufacture of drugs and medicines stood at 1,276 billion yen.

R&D personnel

As of 31 March 2011, researchers numbered 842,900, up 0.3 percent from the previous year. It is the highest figure in the past years and is increasing for ten consecutive years.
Female researchers numbered 123,200, and accounted for 13.8 percent, both of which are the highest in the past years.

Technology Balance of Payments

With regard to technology balance of payments by business enterprises, receipts for technology exports stood at 2,437 billion yen, an increase of 20.9 percent from previous fiscal year. It increased for the first time in three years.
Payments for technology imports stood at 530 billion yen, a decrease of 0.9 percent from the previous fiscal year. It decreased for three fiscal year continuiously.
Receipts from technology exports minus payments from technology imports stood at 1,907 billion yen, an increase of 28.8 percent from the previous fiscal year. It is the highest figure in the past years.
