1. Items concerning household
The status of the
householder (age, status of employment, marital status, etc.) and the status of
the entire household (number of employed persons, number of persons attending
school, number of household members aged 65 or above, etc.) are surveyed.
One
of the objectives of this survey is to supplement the results of the Family
Income and Expenditure Survey. As such, when this survey is examined together
with the results of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey, it is necessary to
survey items concerning the householder.
Trends in household consumption are
elucidated by combining the householder's age, employees of the entire company
at which the householder works, annual income of the entire household, etc.
Household : Gathering of people who live together and support each other or a single member who lives alone.
Householder : A person who is the main income earner of his or her family rather than a householder in name only.
Household member : Householder and his or her family, and
persons living together who support each other.
Family members who have been
away from home for 3 months or more because of their studies or work
and
those who are hospitalized on a long-term basis are not included.
Annual income of entire household (pretax income of the past year)
Since the status of household consumption varies substantially
according to income, the survey examines what kind of disparity exists in the
status of purchase of rarely-purchased expensive goods and services, the status
of ownership and utilization of equipment and services related to Information and Communication
Technology (ICT), monthly expenditure, etc. according to annual income of the
entire household.
2. Status of viewing of terrestrial digital broadcasts and BS broadcasts
People must shift from terrestrial analogue broadcasts to terrestrial digital broadcasts
by July 24,2011.Now data are provided for understanding the status of viewing of terrestrial
digital broadcasts and how people cope with the shift in households.At the same time,BS analogue broadcasts
are also planned to shift to BS digital broadcasts by July 24,2011.So the data are provided also for grasping
the status of viewing of BS digital broadcasts and how people cope with the
shift in households.
3. Status of utilization of Internet for the current
month
Regarding the "status of utilization of the Internet", data
are provided for understanding the effects of the Internet on household
consumption.
4. Status of utilization of electronic money
Regarding
the "status of utilization of electronic money", data are provided for
understanding the utilization of electronic money on household. Moreover, data
are provided for understanding the effects of reward services like "Frequent
Flyer Program" money on household consumption.

This
survey is conducted in response to the interim report at Council for Improvement
of Method of Grasping Personal Consumption Trends The report pointed out that
"it is crucially important to grasp large consumption which has a large error
because of a low frequency of purchase with the aim of grasping overall
consumption trends and improving the accuracy of quick estimates of quarterly
national income , and it is vital to consider conducting a demand-side large
sample survey that covers expensive goods in particular." As such, survey items
primarily consisting of rarely-purchased expensive goods and services were
selected.

Based on
the results of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey, the criterion was set
that expenditure per purchase amount to 30,000 yen or more. Based on this
criterion, items which were purchased less than 1 time per year per household
and which accounted for 0.01% or more of annual consumption expenditure were
selected. Furthermore, items closely related to items selected according to the
aforesaid criterion as well as items required for making quick estimates of
quarterly national income were added.
Items not selected as described above
which made a large contribution to error (excluding allowance, food and other
oridinary items) were also added.
With regard to items, such as house and
land rent, equipment repair and maintenance, tuition and supplementary
education, subdivided items of the Family Income and Expenditure Survey are
surveyed collectively. Survey items total 53 items.

were selected for "info-communications-related goods and services pertaining to
information processing and communication functions of households".
3.Total expenditure
As for personal consumption which
accounts for about 60% of GDP (gross domestic product), the results of the
Family Income and Expenditure Survey as well as total expenditure in this survey
are used in order to contribute to the analysis of macroeconomic assessment.

Since QE estimates do not
include transfer expenditure between family budget divisions in consumption
expenditure, this is a survey item designed to distinguish such expenditure.
4.Status of utilization of Internet pertaining to
consumption
Along with the status of ownership and
utilization of equipment and services related to Information and Communication Technology (ICT),
monthly total expenditure using the Internet will be disclosed.
