Summary of the 2007 Survey of Household Economy (Results Related to Information Technology (IT))

I Outline

1. Ownership and Utilization of Equipments and Services Related to Information Technology (IT)

a. Ownership of equipments which can be connected to Internet

  The proportion of households owning equipments which can be connected to Internet was 62.1% in 2007, up 1.6 percentage points from the previous year (60.5%). Among the equipments, Personal Computer held the largest share of 53.5%, followed by Cell Phone/PHS (45.9%). Compared with the preceding year, Cell Phone/PHS marked a 2.2-point increase, and Personal Computer marked a 0.3-point increase.

b. Equipments which are connected to Internet for a long time

  Among the equipments which can be connected to Internet, those which are connected to Internet for the longest time was Personal Computers (42.4%), followed by 9.7% of Cell Phone/PHS. Compared with the preceding year, Cell Phone/PHS and Personal Computer marked a 1.0-point increase.

c. Means of communication for accessing Internet

  Among households owning equipments which can be connected to Internet, the proportion of those accessing Internet (except for used directory by telephone) was 45.9%, up 1.5 points from the preceding year. Breaking down the access by means of communication which is used most frequently, xDSL(ADSL, etc.) marked 13.8%, followed by Fiber-optics (13.6%), CATV lines (6.9%), and ISDN lines (5.4%).

2. Utilization of Internet

a. Utilization of Internet by purpose

  The proportion of households of which at least one member had accessed Internet at any time within a month was 50.7%, up 0.5 points from the preceding year.

  Breaking down these figures according to the purpose of accesses, Gatherring information accounted for the largest share (43.3%) among the households surveyed, followed by the E-mail (28.4%) and the Internet shopping (19.9%).

b. Utilization of Internet for purchasing goods and services

  In the analysis of the utilization of Internet for purchasing goods and services, the proportion of households of which at least one member had used Internet for Gathering information was 32.2%, up 0.6 points from the preceding year. The proportion of households of which at least one member had ordered through Internet on purchasing was 22.3% of all the households surveyed, while that of households of which at least one member had paid through Internet stood at 12.9%.

II. Analysis by characteristics of Households

( Two-or-more person households )

1. Analysis by Age Group of the Household Head

a. Ownership of equipments which can be connected to Internet

  In an analysis of households owning equipments which can be connected by Age Group of the Household Head, the 40-49 (years-old) was the top at 87.1%, followed by aged those 30-39 at 85.4% those and under 30 at 77.8%. The lowest rate was 38.0% for households whose heads were 70 years old and over.

  In the breakdown by type of hardware with Internet access, the proportion of Personal Computer was the highest in every bracket of those above 30 years, while that of Cell Phone/PHS was the highest in those under 30.

b. Utilization of Internet

  In an analysis of households of which at least one member had accessed the Internet within a month by Age Group of the Household Head, the 40-49 marked the highest proportion at 78.7%, followed by those 30-39 at 76.4% and those 50-59 at 64.6%. Those 70 years old and over were again the lowest at 24.6%.

  In terms of the proportion of households of which at least one member had Gathering information through Internet on purchasing goods and services, the highest-ranked age group was the 30-39 at 53.3%, while the lowest was the 70 years old and over at 12.2%.

c. Total expenditure on goods and services ordered through Internet

  In an analysis of total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered through Internet, the 40-49 marked the highest expenditure at 5,564 yen, followed by those 30-39 at 5,245 yen and those 50-59 at 3,941 yen. Those 70 years old and over were the lowest at 1,047 yen.

2. Analysis by Occupation of Household Head

a. Ownership of equipments which can be connected to Internet

  As for the proportion of households owning equipments which can be connected to Internet by occupation of household head, Corporative administrators was the highest at 80.7%, followed by Employee at 79.2% and Individual proprietors persons and others at 62.9%.

b. Utilization of Internet

  As for the proportion of households of which at least one member had accessed the Internet within a month by occupation of household head, Corporative administrators was the highest at 68.3%, followed by Employee at 67.8% and Individual proprietors and others at 48.0%.

c. Total expenditure on goods and services ordered through Internet

  In an analysis of total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered through Internet, Corporative administrators was the highest at 5,097 yen, followed by Employee at 4,270 yen and Individual proprietors and others at 2,611 yen.

3. Analysis by Yearly Income Group

a. Ownership of equipments which can be connected to Internet

  In terms of the proportion of households owning equipments which can be connected to Internet, it is found that the higher the income is, the higher the ownership rate of such equipments is.

b. Utilization of Internet

  The proportion of households of which at least one member had accessed Internet within a month; it is found that regarding the proportion of households of which at least one member had Gathering information through Internet on purchasing goods and services.

c. Total expenditure on goods and services ordered through Internet

  In an analysis of total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered through Internet, it is found that the higher the income is, the higher the total monthly expenditure on goods and services ordered through Internet.
