I-1 Overview

The number of establishments decreased by 6.9 % (1.4 % per year), and that of persons engaged decreased by 2.5 % (0.5 % per year) compared with five years ago.

The total number of establishments in Japan stood at 6,092,000 as of October 1, 2006 at the 2006 Establishment and Enterprise Census. If the establishments whose business activities and so on were unknown are omitted, the number of establishments was 5,911,000, and that of persons engaged was 58,634,000. Among these, 33,731,000 (57.7 % of the total) were males and 24,903,000 (42.5 %) were females.

The number of establishments decreased by 439,000 (6.9 %) (1.4 % per year), and that of persons engaged also decreased by 1,523,000 (2.5 %) (0.5 % per year), compared with 2001 (Table I-1, Fig. I-1).

The number of persons engaged per establishment increased.

Compared with 2001, the number of persons engaged per establishment increased by 0.4, from 9.5 to 9.9, since the decrease rate of the number of establishments was higher than that of persons engaged while both numbers had decreased (Table I-1).

The closure rate of establishments was higher than the opening rate.

Examining the shifts in private establishments, the number of new establishments (*1) was 1,358,000, and the number of closed establishments (*3) was 1,744,000, with a 22.1 % opening rate (*2) and 28.4 % closure rate (*4).

The opening rate was down by 1.5 points, and the closure rate was down by 1.1 points, compared with 2001 (Table I-2, Fig. I-2).

*1 New establishments are establishments that existed as of the date of the Census which did not exist on the date of the last Census. They include establishments that had been created or relocated from other places from the day after the last Census.

*2 The opening rate is the ratio of the number of new establishments to the number of private establishments counted at the last Census.

*3 Closed establishments are establishments that existed as of the date of the last Census which did not exist as of the date of the Census. They include establishments that had been closed or relocated to other places from the day after the last Census.

*4 The Closure rate is the ratio of the number of closed establishments to the number of private establishments counted at the last Census.
