Chapter 13 Domestic Trade

  This chapter contains statistics on basic structure such as the number of stores, the number of employees, sales amount and an area of sales floor by industry and by the size of staff, sales statistics such as sales amount by industry and sales index based on the sales amount, and estimated sales statistics of the food service industry.

Census of Commerce (Designated Statistics No. 23)

  The "Census of Commerce" became the designated statistical survey No. 23 in June 1949, but it was 1952 when it became a nation-wide census. It had been conducted until 1976 in a two-year cycle.

  Since 1979, it has been carried out in a three-year cycle. After the implementation of the survey in 1997, however, the cycle was extended to five years and the first Census was conducted in 2002. Considering the convenience of users who must await new statistics for a long period of time, it was decided to have a simplified survey in an interim year.

  The survey covers public and private establishments that fall under the major group of "wholesale and retail business." The "self-service method (only in retail business)" and "an area of sales floor (only in retail business)" used in this survey are defined as follows:

Self-service method:

It must satisfy the following three conditions: [1] A commodity is not be wrapped, or it is be prepackaged with a price tag on it, [2] a customer may put commodities which he/she wants to buy in a basket or shopping cart provided by a store, and [3] a customer pays the total amount for the commodities at a check-out counter installed at the end of the sales floor.

An establishment is defined to be self-service shop if it is engaged in sales using an area of 50% or more of the total sales space under the above conditions.

Area of sales floor (only for retail business):

It is an area of the total sales floor (excluding restaurants/tea house, outdoor display place, delivery point, staircases and etc.) that an establishment actually uses for the sales of commodities.

Current Survey of Commerce (Designated Statistics No. 64)

  The predecessor of this survey is the "Statistical Survey of Department Store Sales" which was started in 1946 by the memorandum of the General Headquarters (GHQ) as statistics concerning department stores. In April 1950, it was renewed as the "Survey of Department Store Sales." Subsequent to several revisions, it was extensively revised in terms of survey topics, survey method and sampling design in July 1978, thereby leading to the present form of the survey.

  It covers wholesalers (complete enumeration) and retailers (complete enumeration for large-scale retail stores and a sampling of other retailers). It is conducted every month as a sample survey (except Questionnaire D). Four questionnaires are used: Questionnaire A (for large-scale wholesalers), Questionnaire B (for general stores - both wholesale shops and retail stores), Questionnaire C (for large-scale retail shops) and Questionnaire D (for convenience stores).

Statistics of the Food Service Industry
Estimation of the market scale of the food service industry

  The Food Service Industry Research Center compiles statistics concerning the food service industry and publishes the "Statistics of the Food Service Industry" every year, in which the Center estimates the market scale of the food service industry.

  In the estimation, the food service industry is divided into two major categories - the sector primarily serving foods and the sector primarily serving drinks. Statistics on the retail business of cooked foods are separately compiled and listed. The food-serving sector is composed of food service business and group-meal service business. The food service business includes restaurants, meals served in domestic airplanes and lodging facilities. The group-meal service business includes the supply of meals to schools, establishments, hospitals and nursery schools. Establishments are classified into the establishment operating a cafeteria and the establishment serving boxed meals. Market scale is estimated for each category. The drink-serving sector includes cafes, public houses, bars and Japanese-style public houses.
