The census applies to everyone who is living in Japan as of October 1, 2010. This includes infants and foreign residents who have lived or will be living in Japan for three months or more.

- The accuracy of the results decreases, and it becomes difficult to understand changes compared to past censuses. - Future predictions become inaccurate, which harms efforts to create policy. - Policies of the nation, prefectures, and municipalities that are based on the Population Census become less fair and efficient.

Am I obligated to respond to the Population Census?
The results of the Population Census are used for the policies of the country, prefectures, and municipalities; for private research and development; and as a foundation to help support social and economic growth. Therefore, it is necessary for the census to be extremely reliable. For this reason, everyone must respond to the Population Census.
What happens if I don't accurately respond to the Population Census? Because the current state of the people and households of Japan cannot be accurately grasped, it may become difficult to carry out truly necessary policies.

The Population Census is a census of all the people and households living in Japan. The census results comprise valuable data that is put to use in a variety of fields related to our daily lives, such as child welfare, nursing and medical care for the elderly, and employment measures for young people.
