Lesson 2: How do I answer the census?

Questionnaires are distributed beginning in late September! You should fill yours out according to your situation on October 1.* The survey period for the 2010 Population Census has expired. How and where do I get the questionnaire? How do I receive the questionnaire?
A census taker will visit all homes towards the end of September to distribute the questionnaires. Along with the questionnaire, they will also distribute information about how to fill the questionnaire in (27 languages are available), an envelope for submitting the questionnaire by mail, and an envelope to hold the census documents. If you aren't at home, the census taker will leave a note asking about the best time and way to contact you, so please contact the census taker or your municipality.

How do I submit the questionnaire?
Submission to the census taker by envelope: A census taker will visit again after October 1. Please place your questionnaire in the census document envelope, seal it, and give it to the census taker.Submission by mail: You can use the envelope for submitting the questionnaire by mail to directly send your questionnaire to your municipality (no stamp is required).
* Residents of Tokyo may also choose to answer the census online.

The Population Census is a census of all the people and households living in Japan. The census results comprise valuable data that is put to use in a variety of fields related to our daily lives, such as child welfare, nursing and medical care for the elderly, and employment measures for young people.
