In social and economic globalization and development of
information society, government statistical services are strongly required to
promote development of statistics responding to social and economic changes, reduction
of reporting burdens, improvement in dissemination of statistical data.
In these circumstances, the Japanese Government initiated
to deliberate on new directions in development of the government statistical services
for coming 5 or 10 years in July 2002.
The "New Directions in the Development of Government Statistical
Services" (cited as "New Directions" below) was established as an official agreement of
the Meeting of the Heads of the Statistical Departments of the Cabinet Office and Ministries
in June 2003.
"New Directions", as a guideline, was established based on changes
in the situation after the submission of the report entitled "New Strategies for Government
Statistical Services for the coming Decade" by the Statistics Council in 1995.
It provides a concrete measures about the statistical activities below.
(1) Development of statistics responding to social and economic changes
(2) Efficient and smooth implementation of statistical surveys
(3) Expansion of the utilization of survey results
(4) Promotion of international cooperation
