10.4Water Works Statistics (Statistics Obtained from Administrative Records)

10.1 Energy Balances in Japan (Processed Statistics)
10.1 Energy Balances in Japan (Processed Statistics)

Responsible agency: General Policy Division, Director-General's Secretariat, Agency of Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Purpose: The "Energy Balances in Japan" provides energy balance tables of Japan that show comprehensive energy supply and demand in Japan and that gain insight into overall energy flow in Japan. This book also provides a variety of statistics and information on the energy situation domestically and abroad, etc.

Contents: The energy supply and demand in Japan in fiscal 2004 was as follows:  Final energy consumption was 16,024PJ (petajoule = 1015J = thousand trillion joules). The percentage of that consumption was 44.9% by industry, 31.0% by residential and commercial, and 24.1% by transportation.  The total primary energy supply was 23,674 PJ.  That was comprised of 48.1% petroleum, 21.4% coal, 13.9% natural gas, 10.5% nuclear power, 3.5% hydropower, 0.1% geothermal energy, and 2.5% new and renewable energy other than geothermal.

Precautions for use: There are many varieties of energy, each measured in different units and with differing calorific values. The figures in the energy balance tables of the energy unit have been converted to those of the energy unit by the Japanese “standard gross calorific values” or the “real gross calorific values”. Therefore, please pay attention when seeking consistency with related statistics or when making international comparisons. In addition, the method of compiling the energy balance tables was revised in fiscal 2001, and the values for the fiscal years 1990 and later were replaced with those based on the new method. Therefore, please take notice that the strict comparison of the values for the years before and after fiscal 1990 is not possible.

[Outline of Survey]

Preparation method: "Energy Balances in Japan" is prepared by as much as possible using the results of the official statistical surveys such as Designated Statistical Surveys and Approved Statistical Surveys.

Tabulation items: Comprehensive energy supply and demand in Japan, volume of energy supply by type, final energy consumption by sector (industry, residential & commercial, and transport), Japan's energy supply and demand trends (final energy consumption and total primary energy supply), world’s energy supply and demand by region and by major country, etc.

Name and date of publication: General Energy Statistics is published in March of each year

Note: Because the method of compiling energy balance tables was revised in FY2001, energy supplies from FY1990 to FY2001 have been replaced by values based on new energy balance tables.  Consequently, it should be noticed that strict comparisons between pre-FY1990 values and values for FY1990 and later is not possible.

Note:  Because the method for compiling energy balance tables was revised in FY2001, energy supplies from FY1990 to FY2001 have been replaced by values based on new energy balance tables.  Consequently, it should be noticed that strict comparisons between pre-FY1990 values and values for FY1990 and later is not possible.  Furthermore, "new energy" has had "other wasted heat uses" added to it and been replaced by " new and renewable energy, excluding geothermal energy".
