This chapter contains basic statistics for international comparison in various fields such as population, economy, society, culture, etc. Data are obtained from the following international statistical publications compiled by the United Nations (UN), its specialized agencies and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), etc. which are based on the reports from member countries and their publications, etc. Sekai no Tokei (World Statistics) is also used as a data source for this chapter to keep consistency between this Yearbook and the said publication, both of which are edited by the Statistical Training Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
