CHAPTER 27 COMPARATIVE INTERNATIONAL STATISTICS

  This chapter contains basic statistics for international comparison in various fields such as population, economy, society, culture, etc. Data are obtained from the following international statistical publications compiled by the United Nations (UN), its specialized agencies and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), etc. which are based on the reports from member countries and their publications, etc. Sekai no Tokei (World Statistics) is also used as a data source for this chapter to keep consistency between this Yearbook and the said publication, both of which are edited by the Statistical Training Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

United Nations (UN)

Statistical Yearbook

  This yearbook has been published since 1948. It contains comprehensive international statistics, covering a wide range of topics on population, economy, society, culture, etc. A Japanese version of this yearbook is available.

Monthly Bulletin of Statistics

  This report has been published since 1947, covering monthly or quarterly statistics on more than 50 items for more than 200 countries and regions.

Demographic Yearbook

  This yearbook has been published since 1948. It contains statistics on population for more than 230 countries and regions. A historical supplement was issued in 1999, containing demographic statistics for 50 years from 1948 to 1997. A Japanese version is also available.

Industrial Commodity Statistics Yearbook

  This yearbook has been published since 1974, containing industrial statistics for about 200 countries and regions.

Energy Statistics Yearbook

  This yearbook has been compiled since 1952 to provide statistics on energy for about 220 countries and regions.

National Accounts Main Aggregates Database

  This database was prepared by the Statistics Division of the United Nations in order to enable international comparison of long time-series of GDP. It contains time-series data of more than 200 countries, and series beginning as early as 1970 are available for some countries.

International Labour Organization (ILO)

Yearbook of Labour Statistics

  This yearbook has been published since 1936, containing labour statistics for the last 10 years. Covered are about 190 countries and regions.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

Statistical Yearbook

  This yearbook was newly published in 2004 and provides a selection of indicators on food and agriculture by country and continent.

Yearbook of Fishery and Aquaculture Statistics

  This yearbook has been published since 1947, containing fishery statistics of approximately 250 countries and regions.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

Statistical Yearbook

  This yearbook is compiled with the cooperation of the Statistical Office and the Population Division of UN based on the questionnaires completed by the national committees of UNESCO and statistical agencies of member countries and also on their publications. The yearbook was published in hard cover from 1963 to 1999. Since 2000, however, it is served on the webpage only.

International Monetary Fund (IMF)

International Financial Statistics Yearbook

  This report provides the latest data on domestic finance and international payments for more than 200 countries and regions. It has been published since 1948 as a standard material on domestic and international public finance and monetary situation.

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

National Accounts of OECD Countries, Main Aggregates

  This report contains national accounts of most member countries. They are compiled in conformity with the 1993 SNA (System of National Accounts 1993), which was prepared jointly by the Commission of the European Communities, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), OECD, the United Nations and the World Bank.

Development Co-operation Report

  This publication is an annual report prepared by the Development Assistance Committee of OECD on the survey of the development cooperation extended by the member countries to developing countries. The report has been published since 1961.
  Countries presented in this Yearbook are selected considering the population size and the gross domestic product of each country, regional balance, relations with Japan, and so forth.

International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

World Telecommunication / ICT Development Report

  This annual report has been published since 1994 by the International Telecommunication Union, one of the United Nations Specialized Agencies, to ascertain the development of telecommunications in the world.
